Will Social Bookmarking Sites Or Google Win The Battle?
Increasingly, hundreds of millions of people are using the social bookmarking sites like My Space, Facebook, Friendster, Stumble Upon etc to search for information. So although most online business people have focused on search engine optimisation it is my belief that the smartest online entrepreneurs will also be focusing on S.N.O or social networking optimisation. The thing that smart online consumers realise is that when they use the search engines often their search will give them an answer based on what the advertiser has spent. Contrast this with the way social bookmarking sites work and you will find that with no economic restraints the search someone makes is never compromised. So if you are in the internet marketing business writing content that is social network friendly could be very wise indeed. In 2008 all the big search engines still have considerable control of online retailing but any marketer who ignores the Squidoo's or Facebooks of the world will do so at their peril. I think you would agree that people the world over like to be with people that are like minded so by targeting a particular social bookmarking group you have a market you all respect each other at some level. So if I can ask you about the last online search that you made looking for a particular consumer product did you feel like the search engines were delivering exactly what you were searching for? Or were there a few tricks driven by revenue confusing the process somewhat? In closing I would stress that the search engines will always dominate from an economic position online but to not have a few eggs in the social bookmarking and social networking areas would in my opinion be a mistake.
